Personal, Social & Health Education

Our Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum is rooted in our school values and the promotion of fundamental British values. We aim to prepare children for the complexities of the modern world by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to thrive mentally, emotionally, socially, and physically.

Our RSHE curriculum:

  • Promotes positive, respectful relationships - at home, in school, and online

  • Supports mental and physical wellbeing and reduces stigma around mental health

  • Develops confidence, empathy, and a sense of responsibility and citizenship

  • Encourages open dialogue through discussion, oracy, and inquiry-based learning

  • Aligns with safeguarding priorities, teaching personal boundaries and consent

  • Reinforces cross-curricular links, including Science (health), and Computing (online safety).

How we teach RSHE

RSHE is delivered through weekly class sessions supported by the Kapow primary scheme, which ensures comprehensive, inclusive, and progressive coverage across key areas such as relationships & families, health & wellbeing, online safety and citizenship & economic wellbeing.

Learning is enriched through visits from community professionals such as the fire service and healthcare workers, and through direct teaching of themes within the Equality Act, exploring diverse family structures and experiences.

Sex Education and puberty are taught in line with DfE guidance, with clear communication and optional parental engagement. Lessons are inclusive, varied and sensitive, using discussion and differentiated tasks.

Online safety is reinforced through additional lessons based on the UKCIS Education for a Connected World framework, supporting a whole-school approach to digital resilience.

Impact

Children at Rivermead are becoming confident, responsible individuals who can express themselves clearly and respectfully. Assessment tools built into the scheme, such as quizzes and knowledge organisers, help track progress and inform teaching.

Pupils apply their learning beyond the classroom through:

  • Leadership roles (play leaders, reading influencers)

  • School committees (Eco Club, pupil voice)

  • Community participation and assemblies.

Our RSHE provision fosters a culture of respect, kindness, inclusion and emotional safety, ensuring every child feels heard and valued.
